LeBron James Opts Out of Deal with Cleveland Cavaliers to Become an Unrestricted Free Agent

This decision should be easier than past years with foundation in Ohio

With NBA summer free agency set to begin this Wednesday, LeBron James has officially opted out of his $21.5 million player contract to become a free agent. In comparison to having all NBA front offices contact his agent Rich Paul and start viral campaigns for the best player on the planet, most are under the assumption that he’ll stay home in Ohio. Unlike previous years, King James has been in contact with Cleveland Cavaliers management, so David Griffin won’t have to issue an off-season press conference – anticipating a call back.

While the team doesn’t have salary-cap space or own his bird rights at the moment, James could sign for $22 million this summer – with another player option for next summer. With the salary cap and max salaries set to see a jump in 2017, LeBron will likely repeat his actions for a bigger pay day.

Like the King, Kevin Love had done the same for more internal money out east (a pending five-year/$100 million contract), which will obviously put the team over the cap with three maximum players.

Stand-out defensive and rebounding specialist, Tristan Thompson is also set see a multi-year contract at $13 million per-year, following his stock increase through impressive play for the Cavaliers during their short-handed playoff run. These contracts are obviously set to put Cleveland over the luxury cap, which team owner Dan Gilbert will have no choice at abiding by LeBron’s demands to keep them a contender in his Cinderella pursuit of bringing a title to the land. Look for more details later this week regarding the Cavs off-season moves.
