Sam Smith Talks Adele Comparisons with Rolling Stone

Follow Sam Smith in his cover shoot for Rolling Stone

It’s a chilly afternoon in the meat packing district of New York City, and Sam Smith is ecstatic for his first ever cover shoot with Rolling Stone. In the clip above, he discuses his first show in Manhattan just two years ago, which sold out for only a hundred people, to headlining a solo show at Madison Square Garden later in the week.

With the GRAMMYs nearing in two weeks, Smith jokingly reveals he’s currently on a weight loss regiment; but plans to have 10 burgers when music’s biggest night of the year concludes. After explaining his passion for food on a brief car ride to the dentist, we’re shown a behind-the-scenes look into his cover shoot for the upcoming issue due out later this week. At the age of 22, the UK pop star closes out with opening up on how he never imagined playing MSG on his debut album, In The Lonely Hour – let alone 6 GRAMMY nominations in the same year.

Smith is tired of being tagged the “male Adele.”
Smith calls Adele “my Michael Jackson” – he’s been a fan since he was 16 – but says, “We’re very different, and I feel like the constant comparisons might piss her off.” He adds, “It just annoys me that people can’t digest two pop stars singing really personal songs who don’t look like normal pop stars.”
