Joe Pesci Reveals “Goodfellas” Funny How Scene Was a Previous Real Life Experience

Now go home & get your fucking shine box

Last month at the Tribeca Film Festival, Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro were on hand to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their critically-acclaimed drama-thriller, Goodfellas. For nearly 25 years, fans of the project like us have never been able to get enough of the mobster, which has birthed an entire generation of material in the world of entertainment. In the midst of a brief Q&A following the screening, Joe Pesci shared a rare story with arguably the most memorable scene from the film being “Funny how?”. Pesci revealed to businessinsider that he told those on hand about being a young waiter at a restaurant and telling a wise guy he was funny.

While those on hand found the story ridiculously hilarious, Scorsese instantly decided to give Pesci the ball on-the-spot for an impromptu performance at the Bamboo Lounge with the boys to relive one of his scariest encounters. Take a look at excerpts from the brief interview below and a look at the historic scene above.

“And Joe was telling me a story about what happened to him in Queens or wherever it was and he said to some guy … the guy said something who happened to be a connected guy and he said ‘Well … you think I’m funny?'” Liotta told the audience. “You don’t improvise on camera when we’re shooting,” Pesci said in an interview during a making of documentary, “They all think that Marty [Scorsese] doesn’t do anything, that he lets the actors say ‘Okay, go ahead’ and enjoys it. It’s not true. It’s crazy to think you can go in there and make a movie like that. It has to be structured.”
