Aside from the wars the United States has tried to involve itself overseas, there’s a realer one being fought back at home. You’ll probably be hearing more about it during the upcoming presidential elections, but the wars with the cartels in Mexico are very real. For years, the United States has tried to stop the flow of drugs coming through the border and Cartel Land explores the dangers of the battle going on.
The movie tries to capture how the cartels have practically overtaken villages and their own people, but the film will take a look at the citizen uprising going on in the Mexican state of Michoacán. The people there are fighting against the violent Knights Templar cartel, in attempt to stop their stronghold in the region. The documentary also goes to Arizona, where an American veteran is leading a small group on the fight against the cartels making their way towards the U.S.
Cartel Land will be released this month through Vice and The Orchard.
