“NBA 2K16” Official Box Cover Revealed & Spike Lee Discusses Directing Video Game

Here’s more details on NBA 2K16 before e3 next week!

If you remember in April, Take-Two revealed the upcoming next installment of their simulation basketball series would once again have three superstars covering the game. Kevin Durant, who was previously featured on this year’s title, was showcased alongside James Harden and Steph Curry as the three cover guys for NBA 2K16.

Unfortunately for Thunder fans, the final version of the upcoming basketball title will feature the Harden and Curry, with New Orleans Pelicans superstar Anthony Davis – who are pictured above together in the official box art reveal today. Each of the three stars, however, will still have their own individual release if you’re going the traditional non-digital route of purchasing a physical copy of the game.

Those of you smart people who pre-order the game digitally in September, will be treated on September 5th to a 4-day early release the weekend before its fall release on September 29th.

Spike Lee spoke with USA Today, confirming his involvement in directing the project before game 1 of tonight’s NBA Finals. Without confirming or denying if shitty animations or gameplay is repaired, the company’s current goal with the legendary film maker is to give gamers a new interactive perspective of MyCareer – which will introduce us to social and business challenges of professional sports (see: The Brink, Survivor’s Remorse).

As you can see on the art above, the tagline for this season is “Be the Story,” which will be the priority of Spike giving MyCareer added depth, to keep users intrigued to play past one season off the court.

“We follow a kid through the trials and tribulations of being a top high school player and the decisions he has to make,” Lee tells USA TODAY. He says that although he managed to master the intricacies of a 12-day motion-capture shoot at 2K Games’ Bay Area studios, his video game skills leave a lot to be desired.

“My son’s taught me a bit, but I’m a dinosaur,” Lee says, calling from the Chicago set of his next feature, tentatively and controversially called Chiraq. (Some Chicagoans have complained that the title, an amalgam of Chicago and Iraq, denigrates their town. Lee just says, “It’s gonna be great.”)

“We added MyCareer in 2012, and we’ve always been trying to make it more and more of a real story, like a film with drama,” 2K spokesman Ryan Peters says. “We just told Spike, ‘You transform the narrative, and we’ll change that into digital polygons.’ And he did that, bringing a protagonist and antagonist to the story.”

“I’m guessing every one of us grew up dreaming of the moment we’d be on the cover,” Davis says of the 15-year-old video game franchise. “I’ve seen so many players I know head off and put on a suit with all those balls (for motion-capture duty); it looks so fun.”

“I hope Golden State wins. Now, I’m not hating on LeBron (James, star of the Cleveland Cavaliers), I just like the way Golden State plays,” Lee says. “I think Steve Kerr (the Warriors’ coach) should have been coach of the year. And Curry, well, his father (NBA player Dell Curry) used to kill the Knicks. But his son has a shot that’s so sweet, so quick.”
