You may know of Serge Ibaka through his sweltering defense for the Oklahoma City Thunder, but most don’t really know the story behind the man himself. All the sacrifice it took to make it to the NBA from the Congo. His background and what it took to make it out of his country and why he strives so hard to give back to the community that raised him.
Grantland traveled with Ibaka on a 2-week trip back his home country as he met with his daughter and family, opened up a basketball court for the people there and spoke with many of the natives on his story in hopes of inspiring them to make their dreams come true.
Serge talked to the kids about his journey, telling them he’s came from the same roots. Most in his country don’t see a way out, but he wanted to make it clear to them that with passion and hard work, there may be a way out. Even if they don’t make it to the NBA, he wants them do something great and achieve their goals to make a better way for themselves and their families.
The documentary also has interviews with some of the people closest to Serge, including his grandma and management team, as they give insight to who he really is.
