Should The NFL Get Rid Of Extra Points?

Much like anything in the world, sports needs to evolve with the times and this includes the rules. The latest idea being discussed within the NFL is whether they should abolish extra points from the game. Who is one of the people behind this proposal? None other than Patriots coach Bill Belichick, of course. He thinks that extra points are too easy and having teams go for 2-point conversions after touchdowns would make it much more competitive moving forward.

Bill has a point about how it would make the game more competitive, but implementing the system would be the toughest part. A good example of how something like this has helped sports in the past is when the NBA implemented a 24 second shot clock. Though there is no word on if this change to no extra points will ever happen, you can shoot it to the top of our list of things we want to see happen in the NFL.

OS REWIND: The NFL Says No Tailgating At NYC Super Bowl

“I would be in favor of not seeing [extra points] be an over 99 percent conversion rate. It’s virtually automatic. That’s just not the way the extra point was put into the game. It was an extra point that you actually had to execute and it was executed by players who were not specialists, they were position players. It was a lot harder for them to do. The Gino Cappellettis of the world and so forth and they were very good. It’s not like it is now where it’s well over 99 percent. I don’t think that’s really a very exciting play because it’s so automatic.”
