Neymar had been diving so much in the game against Colombia earlier that when he was carried off the pitch in the 88th minute, most thought he was just killing enough time for Brazil to advance to the next round. He looked like he was in a bit of pain, but soccer players are Academy Award winning actors on the field.
Until they really get hurt.
Neymar was taken to a nearby hospital immediately, where Brazilian doctors gave the diagnostic and ruled him out of the World Cup after suffering a broken vertebra, thanks to Colombia’s Juan Camilo’s knee in that infamous play that wasn’t even carded by the referee. People on the field reported the fact it didn’t look good from first glance and Neymar was seen crying in pain as he was carted off .
This is the worst possible scenario for Brazil, especially since Thiago Silva is also suspended from the next game due to consecutive yellow cards. Doctors are saying Neymar has to be immobilized for weeks, ruling him out of any competition from here on out. Luckily the injury will not require surgery, just time to rest.
Brazil faces Germany in the semifinals on Tuesday, July 8.
