NBA Owners Don’t Pass Proposal To Change Draft Lottery

The 76ers won again

In an attempt to prevent NBA teams from tanking throughout the season to gain better odds in the draft, NBA owners have rejected a proposal that would drastically change the way the NBA Draft works. 17 out of 30 owners were in favor of the new method, but it takes 23 votes to pass the proposal into effect. In the new rule, the bottom four teams would get an equal chance at the first overall pick and the team with the worst record could theoretically receive a pick as low as No. 8.

There is speculation that some owners were pressured by their front offices to vote against it, considering teams are in the middle of a rebuild period and it would spoil their plans towards the future of their franchise. The votes weren’t all from losing teams, though. Some large market teams were against the proposal and small market teams were in favor of it.

Of course, this new change comes as it has been apparent around the league that teams like the Philadelphia 76ers have been actively losing for years now to win lottery odds.
