LeBron James’ Homecoming Spoiled by Knicks in Loss

Knicks pull upset in Cavs opener

After a long summer and even longer day of celebrating the return of their KING, the Cleveland Cavaliers faithful were in store for the city’s biggest day of sports, ever. LeBron James returned home to win the team a championship and revealed it’ll take some time. Wednesday night, the New York Knicks were victim to a 24-point blowout at home in Madison Square Garden against long-time rival the Chicago Bulls. Facing a back-to-back, the team was in Cleveland for another national prime-time game this time against the Cavaliers.

The game was highlighted by an entire day of celebrations including a performance from Kednrick Lamar before the game, and a slew of celebrities featuring Spike Lee, Usher, Justin Bieber and New York City’s first lady Taylor Swift (who was featured in Cavs add on The Q-screen). Action started extremely sloppy on both ends, which was expected from the limited talent New York has on the court and the usage of their triangle offense, but Cleveland’s emotional night was too much of a distraction for them to keep focus on the court.

With family members and the embracing of the crowd, LeBron had one of his worst starts ever for his career. Although he finished the game with 17 points, 5 boards and 4 assist, he had a whopping 8 turnovers, including 5 before halftime alone. Cleveland showed hints of their potential down the line including a few spectacular passes from the big three, the chemistry wasn’t there yet for the NBA’s premiere team. Kevin Love had a decent outing with 19 points and 14 boards to grab a signature double-double and Kyrie led his team with 22 points and 7 assist.

Why did everybody have on this hat last night?

Tristan Thompson and Matthew Dellavedova contributed to 12 points off the bench, but New York saw massive production from their reserves with 41 total points. Carmelo Anthony had more freedom tonight to use his signature isolation scoring tactics, which Derek Fisher allowing to team to have a free-flowing offense that led to their upset tonight. Cleveland now heads to Chicago tomorrow night for a potential preview of the Eastern Conference finals against the Bulls, then play again on the road against the Portland Trail Blazers this Tuesday.
