Miguel Cabrera gets ready for first career DL stint

For the first time in their 8 year relationship, the Detroit Tigers have to put Miguel Cabrera on the DL. The injury occurred Friday night in the fourth-inning. The former MVP took off first base got about four-to-five steps into his run and pulled up in pain. You can only imagine what was going through the minds of everyone affiliated with the Detroit Tigers. The city of Detroit has been holding their breaths awaiting the diagnosis and how long they’ll be without their hero. Diagnosis ended up being a calf strain, then going on the 15 day DL. The organization hopes the healing process takes only 6 weeks. With this being his first time coming back from the DL no one really knows how the guy heals.

It being the first time anyone had to figure out how to replace a guy with 405 career home runs in 12 years. After the injury Cabrera was replaced by Andrew Romine. For the next month and a half, the one player they may look at to replace is Alex Avila. Avila started his first career game at 1st base yesterday, against the Toronto Blue Jays. Normally a catcher and that also being his second game back from the DL, Avila went 1-3 with a walk and strikeout. He also made a high profile catch that took him into the stands on the first base side.

Detroit Tigers know it’s going to be a difficult task to replace 15 home runs, 54 rbis and a .350 batting average in their lineup. A season that isn’t going exactly as planned, they’re now missing their best player. Tigers can only hope they can maintain in a division they are 5 games back from first place.
