NBA’s new Billion dollar TV deal could force another lockout

Last week, the NBA agreed to a 9-year $24 billion dollar contract extension with Disney and Turner networks through the 2024-25 season. The new deal saw a $930 million jump to a $2.66 billion yearly payout – the largest increase of any sports league in North America. Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban was vocal during the announcement of riding away max contracts to pay players the maximum amount of money they were worth, but wanted to also do away with guaranteed contracts. LeBron James and Kevin Durant were some of the first two players to publicly disagree with Cuban’s stance, even prompting Kobe Bryant to vent some.

While citing both players and owners are “overpaid,” but have to fight for their market value given short careers in the NBA for the profession they’ve been working for their entire lives. During his 2-year, $44 million contract, Kobe receiving some flack for not taking a pay-cut like his peers Dirk Nowitzki and Tim Duncan.
