The Broncos are keeping at least one Thomas

Considering John Elway, The Denver Broncos and Demaryius Thomas have not reached a deal for a long-term extension, it looks as if the organization will use the franchise tag on the standout receiver. One of Peyton Manning‘s key offensive weapons risked walking away in free agency, but Denver won’t be looking to allow that, guaranteeing him being in Mile High for at least one year, as both sides continue working out a new contract.

The franchise tag will allow Thomas to receive a guaranteed deal for the average of the top five salaries at his position, which means that this year, he’s looking at roughly $12.8 million. This will include a “non-exclusive” agreement, meaning any other team can throw offer sheets at him during free agency and the Broncos can match.

The two sides are expected to reach an agreement after March 10, when the free agency period begins.

Demaryius is one of three players in NFL history to have three consecutive seasons of over 1,400 yards receiving and at least 10 touchdowns, with one being Marvin Harrison and the other the legendary Jerry Rice. Last year, he set the single-season franchise record for receiving yards with 1,619 yards.
