Canelo Dominates Cotto to Win Middleweight Title, Calls out GGG

“Now it is my era,” – Canelo!

One of the most anticipated fights of the year happened Saturday night, with Canelo Alvarez and Miguel Cotto. Coincidentally, the two entered the bout coming off three straight wins, as they were both chasing an imminent money fight. With Alvarez having the coastal advantage due to his Mexico roots, Cotto still managed to have some Rican fans sprinkled in for their epic middleweight bout.

Before the fight, both made weight, but it was obvious that Canelo bulked up a good 15 pounds prior to the match. Miguel was also stripped of his WBC Middleweight title last week, but still had his lineal and The Ring Middleweight titles on the line. The 25-year-old Alvarez came into the night as the heavy favorite, as he surprisingly was more aggressive than usual in the opening rounds.

Cotto, 35, tried to make a push during the middle stages of bout with multiple combos landed; but Canelo’s defense consistency, reach advantage, height and weight was just too much for Miguel to overcome. It took the duration of the entire 12 rounds, but Alvarez’ throwing and landing ratio success was enough to convince all three judges to give him the unanimous nod.

During his post-fight interview, Max Kellerman would bring up the super fight with Gennady Golovkin. Caenlo went to say “I’m not afraid of ANYBODY. If you want me to fight GGG, I’ll fight him right now.” While that’s obvious not the case to put his career at stake again this early in the game.

Golden Boy Promotions can let fans dream tonight about the fight that will likely not happen for another two or years. Alvarez now improves to 46-1 (see: Mayweather), and becomes the first Mexico fighter to win middleweight and junior middleweight titles. JAY Z, Roc Nation Sports and Cotto now hit back the drawing boards for their next move in his late career.
