Sony Removes Artist’s Music From Soundcloud Because of Lack of Monetization

R.I.P. Soundcloud

If you’ve noticed a change with Soundcloud the past year or so, it’s because major labels are dipping their hands all through the streaming service. Most of you have noticed ads while playing music, music from DJ’s taken down and now, Sony is going the extra mile by removing songs from their artist roster.

Why, you ask? Apparently “a lack of monetization opportunities” is the reason Miguel, Adele, Passion Pit, Hozier, and MS MR will not be available to stream on Soundcloud.

In translated terms, Sony isn’t making enough money off the service (for whatever the actual reason is), so they’ve decided to strip them of the music and hit them where it hurts. The two sides have tried to strike a deal, but it doesn’t seem likely as of right now, even though negotiations are still ongoing.

“We are in ongoing conversations with major and independent labels and will continue to add partners to the program. We’ve always put control in the hands of creators, and anyone who makes music and audio can decide when and how they want to share it with fans, allowing artists to essentially broadcast out to the world the availability of new content.”

Soundcloud claims to have dished out $2 million in advertising revenue, but that doesn’t seem to be enough for these money hungry labels.
