Method Man Is Not A Fan of Waiting 88 Years For Wu-Tang Album

Just what he was feeling at the time

The aura of the super exclusive Wu-Tang Once Upon a Time in Shaolin album made headlines by the way it was supposed to be released. The concept behind it? To turn it into a work of art because we live in an age where music is under appreciated and taken for granted.

At a glance, the idea seemed genius, but after multiple reports of how the project would be released and how much people could bid on it, there seems to be confusion by fans in regards to the status. The latest news regarding he situation came in the form of the auction to buy the album, which would potentially see the album released in 88 years. Whoever wins the highest bid will not have the right to release the album, only own the single copy as a collectors item.

That means that the owner of the one-of-a-kind album cannot replicate or release anything, because that’s not how it works in art. When you buy an original Picasso painting, you don’t own the right to replicate it. In terms of this new Wu album, that particular right will only expire after 88 years of owning that piece of art.

Method Man was asked about the album release on the set of his new movie The Cobbler and he didn’t have such nice things to say about what’s going on with it:

Fuck that album. I’m tired of this shit and I know everybody else is tired of it too. Fuck that album, if that’s what they are doing. I haven’t heard anything like that, but if they’re doing crap like that, fuck that album. Straight up. I’m just keeping it 100. When music can’t be music and y’all turning it into something else, fuck that. Give it to the people, if they want to hear the shit, let them have it. Give it away free. I don’t give a fuck; that ain’t making nobody rich or poor. Give the fucking music out. Stop playing with the public, man.

I dug the whole idea in the beginning. I’m like, ‘Wow, this has never been done before.’ I was cool with shit. But now, this is ridiculous. 88 years? Really? If that shit is true, that shit is stupid. You have to wait 88 years to hear some shit? By that time, it’s going to be fuckin’ played out. If it ain’t already played out. I hope that’s a rumor. Whoever said that, that shit is fuckin’ stupid.

The album is a one-of-one because no backup copies of the project exist everywhere. The 31 tracks exist only in the silver-and-nickel-plated box that contains a 174-page lyric manuscript with credits and anecdotes on the production of each track. It was all printed on gilded Fedrigoni Marina parchment and encased in leather. That sounds like more than a stand-alone work of art.

Peace to the gods. Hopefully this doesn’t start any beef.
