The talk surrounding this year’s Sundance Film Festival has been the coming of age film DOPE, which stars A$AP Rocky, Vince Staples, Forest Whittaker and others. On Saturday night, Rocky attended the premiere in Utah and performed at the after party, but this joyous occasion wasn’t as exciting as you may think. It has been only a week since the untimely death of A$AP Yams.

During his performance, he cut his set short abruptly after dedicating the last song to his late friend. He spoke to Billboard after the fact, to give his take on how he’s felt the past week and shut down any rumors that have circulating on the Internet.

“That performance — that was just going to stop me from crying. I had to address it, because the whole time I was rapping and I wasn’t into it, which is sad, but I just gotta keep it real. I can’t front. It’s even harder knowing that I gotta fly out in less than an hour just to go bury him. That’s the part that eats at me.

People were saying that Yams overdosed on drugs — he didn’t overdose on any drugs. I feel like people feel that way because that’s all he’s in pictures doing. When you see A$AP Yams you see Hennessey or purple drink, you see some type of controlled substance or illegal narcotic.

I’ll be back in my zone in a bit,” he said. “I just got it together. This all happened and the timing is so wrong, with me doing Sundance and Mens Fashion Week in Paris.”

A$AP Rocky flew out to New York to Yams funeral earlier today, as the entire Hip-Hop community sent their well wishes to the rapper and his crew. His upcoming album is still yet untitled, but it will still be executive produced by YAMS, as well as DJ Dangermouse.

Here is video of Rocky’s dedication live on stage in Utah.
