The Real “True Detective” Story in Louisiana

No Woody Harrelson or Matthew McConaughey

Nic Pizzolatto’s True Detective might critically acclaimed and celebrated across the country, including here on OS, but the real story still haunts the people of Ponchatoula, LA. The HBO series is inspired by the heinous acts that occurred there over 10 years ago by Louis Lamonica Jr., the successor to Hosanna Church, who committed child abuse and Satanic rituals inside the building.

VICE traveled down to Louisiana to talk to Stuart Murphy and Tom Tedder (the real life Marty Hart and Rust Cohle), as they described how they brought the men responsible for the crimes to justice and how it affected not only them, but the entire town, forever.

In the short documentary, the FBI detective, sheriff deputy and district attorney on the case talk about the tactics they used interrogate the youth pastor and Lamonica in order to get confessions out of them, as well what they found inside the youth room after a search warrant had been issued to look inside the church. According to their reports, the abuse that took place was only detailed by two children, who later retracted their statements and refused to testify against the pastor. Detailed diagrams were drawn by them that were too graphic to show in the documentary.

Even though the confessions were their biggest piece of evidence, none of the children involved ever came forward at the time or afterward, which makes the people working the case if the entire truth was truly uncovered.
