The Reason Why The Super Mario Theme Song is So Catchy

As someone who actually has the Super Mario coin as a text message alert and someone who actively searches for Mario Brother alerts to throw on, it intrigued us to learn why the song just pops into our heads at the most random times. Turns out, there’s a science to it.

It’s not just the Mario theme song, either. Old Tetris, Zelda or Final Fantasy music works the same way.

Apparently, the Nintendo used a different way to add music soundtrack to their games. They actually had to program the music into the game itself, through the micro processor. Composer Koji Kondo had to write the melodies in code and once he figured out that the characters in the game moved in sync with the tempo of the Nintendo‘s micro processor, he composed the music around that. Meaning every coin, stomp, jump, mushroom and death bopped to the beat of the song.

Kondo has inspired many video game soundtracks, even though he has stuck with the Mario series and helped create the sound of most titles that have been released ever since.
