Activision Announces Third Developer For Call of Duty Series

Earlier today, Activision Blizzard revealed their fourth quarter calendar year results. In the midst of celebrating the success for Call of Duty: Ghosts becoming the 2nd highest selling third party title of 2013, the company seems confident moving forward into 2014 with the upcoming release of their RPG-fist person shooter, Destiny. Developed by the original Halo creators Bungie, they’re visioning Destiny as the next billion dollar franchise under its umbrella.

Some interesting news in the press releases however was the announcing of a third developer for its Call of Duty series. In the past, Treyarch, and Infinity Ward have been the two sole developers in the franchise exchanging slots every year to add onto the franchise. Infinity Ward has previously been known for their work on the popular Modern Warfare and now Ghosts series, while Treyarch has been behind the Black Ops releases.

This fall, newly appointed developer Sledgehammer Games will be the developers of the next Call of Duty video game hitting all platforms. Fans of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 title from 2011 should be familiar with their work, as the collaborated as a subsidiary under Infinity Ward at the time. Treyarch’s follow-up to Black Ops II will be arriving in 2015, with Infinity War’s sequel to Ghosts coming in 2016. More on the story after the jump.

Modern Warfare 4 is logical guess we’re taking for Sledgehammer Games debut later this year, but we’ll have to wait until e3 in Los Angeles this summer for the unveiling.
