Under normal circumstances, we’d say that Aaliyah is an untouchable artist that shouldn’t be remixed unless it was done by Timbaland or Missy Elliott. Drewbyrd from the OpM crew put a dope spin on her “We Need A Resolution” single, though. It wasn’t even a remix that was a different beat over her acapella, it was more something you’d hear at a party when everyone is cooling out.
We lowkey wish Dom Kennedy would have dropped a verse on it.
Today, Aaliyah Dana Haughton would’ve turned 35 years old, but the original Brooklyn born actress-songstress sadly left us nearly 13 years ago. There were plans from Drake, 40 and the rest of the OVO camp to drop an official posthumous Aaliyah album of unreleased work, but that dream have been put on indefinite hold.
Hot 97’s DJ Mister Cee decided to dedicate his throwback at noon mix to fellow BedStuy product baby girl; consisting of most of her hits from the 90s, 00s and a few features we hadn’t heard in quite some time. Listen to the 45-minute long mix of Aaliyah after the jump.
Losing such a beautiful soul and voice so early in her life is still one of the biggest tragedies in music, that the world has ever seen. Aaliyah set the bar for R&B during her time in this earth and still to this day, her presence is widely felt. From features using unreleased vocals from the songstress, possible posthumous albums, to Drake’s tattoos (we kid), Aaliyah was truly one of a kind. While many knew her from her tracks that dominated charts left and right, as well as plenty of movie soundtrack singles, her catalog as a whole reached legendary status in a very short amount of time.
While she wasn’t one that was slept on, Aaliyah made so many great songs it was almost impossible to listen to them all because you had so many that stayed on repeat. Today, we decided to help you out a bit and picked our favorite Aaliyah songs that never made the cut to be singles, but could’ve made the same impact if they were. Let us know if we missed any in the comments section and tell us which was your favorite Aaliyah songs that should’ve been singles! You know there were a handful of them.
One time for one of our favorite R&B songbirds. We miss you, Aaliyah!
In just over 6 weeks, Chris Brown’s “Fine China” has become one of the hottest tracks of the year, dominating many playlists from all around on iTunes, MTV, BET and more. Earlier this week, Chris Brown went to Compton and filmed a music video for his next single “They Don’t Know,” which features the late-singer Aaliyah. During the 2013 BET Awards nomination revealing earlier today, Breezy said he wanted to shoot the video in the Compton to uplift and bring positivity to the community.
Stay tuned for Breezy’s sixth studio album “X,” to release on July 16th with features from the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Pharrell Williams, Timbaland and RiRi (just to name a few). After the jump you can watch a sample teaser of the visual with Chris on the streets of LA with many people surrounding him to record the video.
*UPDATE* BTS Footage & Bonus Snippet Of The Track Added.
If we had it our way, Drake would be releasing that R&B mixtape that he was talking about last year, in epic fashion. You can’t deny this guy’s music on the R&B tip. From “Trust Issues,” to “Fall For Your Type,” Aubrey Graham has been hitting them out of the park. And that’s a few of the handful of tracks he’s got in the arsenal.
Most recently, Drake took his R&B talents to the studio with James Fauntelroy and crafted a remake of Destiny’s Child “Say My Name.” It’s safe to say most weren’t expecting him to flip it, but it worked. AND IT PROBABLY WON’T EVEN SHOW UP ON THE ALBUM.
But it got us to thinking, what if Drake really dropped an R&B tape soon, what other tracks could he flip? (Not saying it should be all remixes, because we’d want a fair share of original tracks). There’s some shit that he can give life to in 2013, though.
As R&B aficionados, these are some of the tracks that came to mind.
As one of the most played tracks behind the scenes here during the month (maybe year) has been Curren$y Spitta’s “New Jet City” mixtape has been the Lloyd & Trinidad Jame$ collaborative track “Purple Haze.” Luckily we weren’t the only ones feeling the same way as DJ Slim K of the Chopstars Click decided to add a PURPLE Slowdown of the record.
It doesn’t stop here though, as he’s just released his “The Next Chapter” which features new songs as well as a few classics from the likes of Z-Ro, Notorious B.I.G, Aaliyah, OutKast, Jermaine Dupri, Curren$y, Da Brat, LE$, Paul Wall & Slim Thug, Kirko Bangz, Trinidad Jame$, Lloyd to name a few. You can check after the jump to view the complete 18-track tracklistings along with a download link.
Another Slim K Slowdown as our homie releases the latest installment in his long running R&B series “Nice & Slow” as he decides to do one up for the late baby girl. This might be one our favorite mixes this year as we get some of the freshest slowed down sounds arguably since DJ Screw in our opinion in this dedication mixtape Aaliyah for promotional use only. Check after the jump to view the complete tracklisting and a download link provided as you can listen to a preview of the tape with “At Your Best.”
Yup, so get that PURPLE d(r)ank out to end your day off right with this classic mix.
There’s been plenty of controversy surrounding Aaliyah’s upcoming posthumous album the past month, but after releasing the first single, “Enough Said” with Drake, one thing is for sure: the album is coming out at one point or another.
Set for a 2013 release date, Drake and Noah “40” Shebib are executive producing the record, but Missy Elliott & Timbaland have not been contacted to be on the album. Fans have been begging for the two to join the OVO combo of 40 and Drake out of respect for Aaliyah, yet the two remain on the outside looking in.
Yesterday, Barry Hankerson from Blackground Records, tweeted this artwork saying 16 unreleased tracks will be released next year. Could this be the cover?
Today marks the 11th anniversary of Aaliyah’s death and like always, we pay our respects to the Haughton family and the friends she left behind after that tragic accident.
Let’s not focus on the controversy surrounding her upcoming album, but rather on the impact she made on this earth with her music. What better way to remember than the “I Miss You” tribute video, featuring most of the people who she touched?
Contrary to previous reports of Timbaland and Missy Elliott’s involvement in the upcoming oVoXo posthumous Aaliyah album, reps for the two have now confirmed they will not be participating with Drake and 40 for the singers upcoming album.
“Although Missy and Timbaland always strive to keep the memory of their close friend alive, we have not been contacted about the project nor are there any plans at this time to participate,” Mona Scott-Young, longtime manager for Missy Elliott, says. “We’ve seen the reports surfacing that they have been confirmed to participate but that is not the case. Both Missy and Timbaland are very sensitive to the loss still being felt by the family so we wanted to clear up any misinformation being circulated.”
This comes just days after Aaliyah’s cousin and CEO of Blackground Records, Jomo Hankerson clairified rumors and confirmed Missy and Timbo’s involvement for the album. Last week Drake stated “people ‘essential’ to Aaliyah’s career were welcomed to have involvement with the late singers new album”; but now it seems highly unlikely both camps will be joining together for this upcoming album.
It didn’t take long for the homie OG Ron C to remix the newly released Aaliyah x Drake record. Here’s the official Chopped Not Slopped treatment of “Enough Said”. Expect to hear this on the new OVO x Chopstars Mixtape Vol. 2.
After hearing reports that Drake would be premiering a new song with Aaliyah at the OVO Fest this weekend, the song people have been waiting for finally surfaces. Word is he will be executive producing her upcoming album, but Timbaland has had his concerns, saying he shouldn’t put anything out without the help of him and Missy Elliott.
What do you think of the Aaliyah x Drake collaboration?
It has been reported by sources close to Drake’s camp that fans at the OVO Fest this weekend, may be hearing a new record from Drake, which features the one and only Aaliyah. According to Billboard, Drizzy could also be executive producing the late R&B icon’s upcoming posthumous album. To this day, it is very known that Drake is one of the biggest Aaliyah fans on this Earth, so the news really doesn’t come as a surprise to us.
Just four months ago during a interview with U.K. radio host Tim Westwood, he mentioned that he had some special Aaliyah news coming soon.
Is it possible that this is the news that he was referring to?
